Chinese percussion Instruments – wooden blocks – what are they called?
I have a pair of rectangular wooden blocks approx 22 x 4 x 3 cm. the top surface is convex and bottom surface concave. I think they are hollow and make a nice sound when lightly tapped against each other. These ones are almost black, highly lacquered and have some vertical chinese lettering – Does anyone know what they might be called ?
Zhuban are two plates of bamboo (16cm-19cm by 7cm-8cm by 1cm in size) tied together with the convex sides facing each other. The player holds one plate and rotates his or her wrist. The loose plate would then strike against the lower part of the other plate. Or, the player would vigorously rotate the wrist to cause the one plate to hit against the top and then the bottom of the other in succession. The Zhuban is an ancient percussion instrument without fixed pitch. It originated no later than the Song Dynasty (960-1279) for story telling. It is still quite popular today in folk entertainment.
